New theme menu

Benfleet theme gets a new menu

Along with some other additions, a new menu format has been added to the benfleet theme. It is a drop down menu specifically designed to work with a responsive theme. The menu divides each level into a series of panels, to provide a breadcrumb trial back to the main page.

Switch to SoSLUG custom theme

The Benfleet theme

The theme of the development site up to now was based on the WordPress twenty thirteen theme. Behind the scenes work has been going on to develop our own custom theme and although the theme is still in development, the site has now been switched over to this new (Benfleet) theme. A few tweaks to fix some obvious errors, the change has been made to facilitate testing, and to invite comments from other members of SoSLUG.

Progress update – dynamic home page

The original banner image of the twenty thirteen page has been changed, so the layout more closely resembles that of the live (Drupal) site. Currently the SoSLUG logo is missing from this banner.

A dynamic home page has now been set up, to welcome visitors, and to display the most recent posts; moving them from the footer area. While still based on a child of the twenty thirteen theme, these changes bring the basic layout of the site a step closer to the envisioned layout; i.e. by combining static pages with posts.

One consequence of this has had the effect of reducing the width of the content area on the home page. A new template for the home page will be introduced to address this, and to separate its layout from that of other pages. In the latter case, the recent posts may revert to the footer area.

The top level menu has been changed, to include an entry for recent posts, thus making them more accessible.

AWSoM

Ambient Weather Sound Machine by Stuart Bowditch & Damien Robinson

awsom_flyer

A project involving Stuart Bowditch, Damien Robinson, MediaShed & SoSLUG

I have always had an interest in every day ambient sounds and the fact that they usually go unnoticed by everyone. Maybe its because we are bombarded with thousands of sound all at once that we tend to block them out, especially more mundane sounds like traffic noise. It seems that when we are in a quiet environment that we become more aware of the surrounding ambience, even though there maybe less noises. We have chosen a quiet, remote location and will take sounds from the place itself. To do this we have devised a system where Damien Robinson, a deaf media artist who works with sounds and vibration, can capture sounds that she can feel through vibration alone.

Scouts Telephony Project

Scouts Home Made Telephone

Collaborative organisations

  • SoSLUG
  • MediaShed

Here is a project that we started along with the the Strowger Project which you will hear more about later in the additional supporting pages.

Introduction

If you can image the scenario, you are together with you friends in a field and your Scout master has banished you to your separate tents for the evening but boys will be boys and you want to talk to your friends in another tent without your Scout Master knowing of course. Armed with this device you can make a call to the next tent for a little more than pocket change and some soldering expertise and your Scout Master will be scratching his head and none the wiser. This device has many perhaps unrealised applications this is just one of them but with upto date easy to obtain components that we hoped would add an element of fun.
